How To Make A Stencil With Your

Stenciling is a chic way to update and add pizzazz to your home decor but did you know that you can create custom stencils with your Cricut machine? Say what? Yes. With your Cricut you can cut almost anything but many folks chose to use vinyl. Although vinyl is a great choice for many projects it can get costly after awhile. Contact paper is a perfect and affordable solution for creating custom stencils. If you would like to use your stencil repeatedly I recommend investing in stencil vinyl. Just cut out your design on your Cricut using the vinyl setting, adhere to your surface, and paint away!

Quick story of a crafting fail. Years ago I hacked my ikea table to paint the lyrics “It Was All A Dream…” on it. I loved it! Fast forward a few months ago I was cleaning my microfiber couch and I accidentally spilled rubbing alcohol on the table! This was Isopropyl Alcohol 91% the strong stuff, it literally peeled the paint AND the varnish off. EEK! No worries. I was revamping my living room anyway. Using a stencil instead of hand lettering gave my table a new look but same quote.

There is one technique you NEED to know if you want to make stencils that have script font with your Cricut and that is welding. Welding allows to allows you to join shapes to create a single customized image by removing any overlapping cut lines. This can be a great way to simplify a design, keep the letters of a word connected, or combine shapes to create new designs. Here is a crash course in welding.

Make sure the images you would like to weld overlap. In most cases you have to ungroup script text and manually adjust the letters to get them just right. Playing with the letter space scale works as well.

Select all images that will be welded together. Once two or more layers are selected, the Weld tool will become active. Click “Weld” in the Layers panel to merge the selected images. Wherever cut paths have intersected, only the exterior cut path will remain.

Proceed to cut the contact paper how you would any vinyl project and you have a stencil! Watch my video to see how the table turned out plus some stenciling tips. Want to make your own “dream” coffee table? Check out my design file here.
