A Day At The Races: DIY Fascinator

A DAY at the races WP

Recently, I had the opportunity to attend my 1st horse race at the prestigious Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY. Twenty five NYC-based bloggers (including my fashion forward homie, Esta) loaded up a coach bus and took a day trip courtesy of America’s Best RacingΒ for a day of fashion, glamour and horse racing. It was a promising day indeed.

I am not the biggest gambler or fashionista but I could not let the opportunity to make my own “fancy hat” slip past me. There is always time for DIY!

I wanted challenge myself I decided to make my own fascinator with only materials I already had in my possession. No trips to the art store, fabric store, or home depot. SIGH.

Due to time restrictions I couldn’t take individual pictures of the process.

First I took the green craft paper and cut it to fit the top of the plate. I used my exacto knife to cut two slits into the paper plate. Yarn was used to weave the headband to the paper plate. Once the plate was fastened with yarn (and a little adhesive for extra security) I took the galvanized wire (which is sturdy yet flexible) and poked holes through the plate, bent the tips and used more adhesive to keep it in place. After the foundation was built I used yarn to wrap the wire so it can have the appearance of branches. Lastly, I took the ivy leaves and roses to decorate the rest of the fascinator!

Ta-da!20150808_151256I had to ditch my work gloves for the day and get snazzy. This is actually my favorite dress.
