As you already know I like to add a bit of culture with my ratchet while abroad. If you’ve been following me on Instagram you know I had a fantastic trip to South Africa recently. I was able to visit the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and club hop in Cape Town. One of my favorite moments was when I took a cooking class with Zainie Misbach in the Bo-Kaap area of Cape Town. We made Roti, curry chicken, samoosas, and my new favorite snack Chilly Bites- “Daltjies.” It is a spiced spinach ball of greatness and I cannot wait to share the recipe with you!
What You Need
- 1 Cup of self raising flour
- 1 Cup of water
- 1 Cup of chick pea flour
- 2 Teaspoons of baking powder
- 2 Teaspoons of turmeric
- 2 Teaspoons masala or chillies, optional
- 1 Medium sized onion, chopped
- 2 Cups of chopped spinach
- 1 Egg
- 1 Teaspoon of salt
What To Do
Mix all dry ingredients together in a bowl. Add onions and spinach and mix. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Add egg, mix then add water.
Mix the dough until texture has an easy drop consistency.
Heat the oil on a medium flame. Warm a spoon by dipping it into the hot oil then scoop enough dough to make one “daktjie” and drop it into the oil. Fry until throughly cooked. Drain daltjies on tissue paper.
Tip Use a skewer stick to poke the center of the chilly bite while frying to know when it is completely fried.
