Yes you are reading a tribute to Michael McDonald if you didn’t read the picture.
This all started one night I was up too late watching Time Life: Easy 80’s paid program. As a child I LOVED the music paid programs, all you needed was 15 payments of $19.95 you can get 450 of the greatest hits from that decade! Sign me up. It is 3:30am and I am reliving my childhood, snuggie and all. Once it ended I felt empty. Wow, you really needed talent to have a record deal, times have changed. Completely flustered, I went on a downloading spree to make sure my 80’s catalog was tight. I now have enough to finally start my cover band! One classic I didn’t have to download was Mr. McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’ (Ever Time You’re Near).” It was heavily sampled by Warren G. feat Nate Dogg in 1994 for the hip-hop classic “Regulate.” That song single-handling gave G his career, grammy nods, and topping the billboard charts all because of who? M dot dizzy.. Greatness.
*note* The rapper Jadakiss has also sampled this song for his debut album.
Apparently the term “Blue Eyed Soul” is offensive. Mainly because it is credited to “white people doing black people soulful music” I don’t know who it exactly offends more but let’s reclaim, embrace, and make it our own and then everyone will be happy! Maybe if we dropped the “E” in blue or the “D” in eyed… that might work. Sound familiar???
Besides giving an “alley oop” to west coast rap Michael along with others have paved the way for other blue eyed giants. Jon B, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Robin Thicke, and Justin Timberlake all have soaked their hits in that “surprising soul” you know, those notes you didn’t expect them to hit. Woo! Sends chills down the spine. So if you like “Sexyback” give “The Don of Blue Eyed Soul” a handclap.
*note* Since this post has been written Nate Dogg has passed away R.I.P.
